Study Privilege

Employee Eligibility
Academic Faculty and Administrative Professionals on regular or special appointments and State Classified staff, may register for credit courses at Colorado State University that are either job related or career enhancement in nature on a space available basis each academic year without the assessment of the student portion or total resident instruction tuition or general fees provided appointments are at least half-time. Employees who qualify become eligible as soon as their employment begins. Up to six (6) credits per academic year (Summer-Spring) may be available based upon the percentage of your appointment as defined below.

Academic Faculty and Administrative Professionals on temporary appointments and Post-Doctoral Fellows, Veterinary Interns, and Clinical Psychology Interns are eligible for the Study Privilege program after completing one year of continuous service at half-time or greater. Nine-month temporary employees must have completed two consecutive semesters of continuous half-time or greater employment (excluding summer session) and be reappointed the subsequent academic year to become eligible; 12-month temporary employees must have completed twelve months of continuous half-time or greater employment to fulfill the year of continuous service requirement.

According to State Fiscal Rules, courses taken by an employee under study privilege must benefit the State and enhance the employee’s performance, as determined by the head of his or her administrative unit (such as a department head). The employee must obtain the written consent from the head of his or her administrative unit to register for specific courses.

Eligible Courses
Only credit courses which are a part of the Colorado State University Curriculum, as defined by the Colorado State University General Catalog, are available under this benefit. These courses will be identified with a departmental course number. Registration forms for these courses are located on the University Registrar’s website at www.colostate.edu/Depts/Registrar. Questions about this form should be directed to the Registrar’s Office, Room 100, Administration Annex.

Faculty and staff may also enroll in credit courses (section number 700 or higher) listed in the Division of Continuing Education Bulletin. Registration forms for these courses are located on Continuing Education’s website at www.learn.colostate.edu/students/forms/employee.pdf. However, tuition for these courses may be higher than “resident instruction” tuition, in which case, the difference must be paid by the employee.

Certain tuition and fees are not covered by Study Privilege, so these must be paid by the employee. Fees not covered may include course fees, department fees, the University Facility Fee, University and College Technology Fees, and similar charges as may be imposed from time to time. Available credits are based on the level of appointment as follows:

100% appt. - 6 credits
75-99% appt. - 4 credits
50-74% appt. - 3 credits
under 50% - 0 credits
